We are called toward radical love and hope. We are called to stand in solidarity with communities of color. As Dr. King famously demanded to America ``be who you say you are on paper.`` This nation has truly defaulted on its promise to Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian-Pacific and Arab diasporic communities. We cannot stand idly by and allow harm to continue. We must build a new society, a beloved community, where we can all live free and thrive. This audacious task requires everyone's participation.
We are gathered here today to examine how educators, students and community builders can disrupt racism and create the beloved community. We cannot pretend that racism is absent from our schools, universities and community institutions. It actually thrives in those spaces. So, how do we take care of us? This conference will explore:
• how we can engage in a deep interrogation of our own relationship to white supremacy and align ourselves with racial justice;
• how we can honor and learn from our ancestors, who already laid pathways to create and sustain the beloved community;
• how we can take strategic, meaningful action that centers Black, Indigenous and People of Color, while resisting the trap of performative activism;
• how we can develop communities of care and accountability.
